Catherine Gormley, managing director of Sligo’s Catherine Gormley Hairdressing talks new design vibes, clientele, and the importance of atmosphere

Catherine Gormley, managing director of salon Catherine Gormley Hairdressing in Sligo has recently undergone a refit of her salon space. Now open again for business, (and with multiple IHF awards to boot), Creative HEAD catches up with owner-driver on her reasons for the refit and the message she is looking to get across with the new look.
CH: Who did you work with on the refit?
CG: The original fit out of the salon was in October 2016 with the fantastic support from both Laura Gethins and Richard Barry, both from ALFAPARF Milano Professional. They helped with the furniture and layout at that time. So, I had no hesitation in approaching them with I decided to do this refit.
CH: What atmosphere did you want to create this time?
CG: I wanted to create an open, yet cosy and warm environment and Laura and Richard suggested bespoke custom-made styling stations by Pahi Barcelona and Big Brother styling chairs from Kiela of Holland, which fitted my ideas perfectly. I wanted to create a space that could really demonstrate my creative flair and ideas, but also help build a strong team, focusing on developing and supporting upcoming stylists. I also wanted to create a warm and welcoming family and friends type environment within my salon.
CH: Was the process stressful?
CG: After months of searching through magazines, Pinterest, Instagram, and multiple stores, I had a strong image in my mind of what I wanted. There were lots of mind changes and anxiety but I am so happy with the outcome now. I really could not have done it without the support of Richard Barry, whose vision and experience really helped me along the way.

CH: What does your salon space represent to you?
CG: I feel it represents my development and flourishing as a hairdresser who started off 23 years ago as a junior stylist. It is the culmination of my hard work, passion and dedication that is within reach for anyone willing to put in the work and follow their dreams.
CH: What sort of clientele do you have?
CG: We are so fortunate to have a loyal, supportive, and appreciative clientele ranging in all ages and genders. I love customers who come in and make themselves at home, sometimes not even for services, but simply to pop in for a cup of tea and a gossip!
CH: What services do you most enjoy offering?
CG: We offer a wide range of services, catering for all hair styles and types. I personally love cutting and creating up styles to meet the current trends.
CH: Is education important to you?
CG: Education has always been part of my dreams and goals, while we are still in the planning stages, I feel this will be the start of a new chapter in my hairdressing career.
