The Creative HEAD and Layered Online team visited salons across the UK for the third annual Big Hair Do – here they share their glittering highlights…
“The idea behind the Big Hair Do is, yes, having fun with some fizz in hand, but also celebrating the expertise in UK salons, and this was brilliantly illustrated at Headmasters Bromley High Street. There were tonnes of hair-ups a-happening, showing clients that a trip to the salon is about so much more than a cut or colour. Lots of customers got great tips on quick DIY dos or insight on using their heated tools to perfection, and one seat was set up with a colour cape for colour readings (which properly impressed clients). It was a great team building evening too – staff got to get their braid on (or their knots on – I learned so much about knots!) and properly have a play with everyone’s hair. Two of the visitors had never set foot in a salon in their adult life, using mobile hairdressers at home instead – we think they might change their minds about that after seeing this display!”

“Stonehills Hairdressing sold out of tickets for its Big Hair Do with up to 150 guests expected on the night, leading to a steady stream of people coming through the salon doors over the course of the evening. It began with sushi, cupcakes and prosecco, and ended with some pretty epic hair styling and a lot of happy customers. Stylists were on hand to provide everything from braids to big, bouncy curls, as well as one-on-one consultations for those that potentially wanted something a bit more time-consuming. One stylist gave a demo on how to use extensions, taking a client’s hair short to long in a matter of minutes and wowing onlookers. Local beauty company, Face&Skin, was also drafted in to provide a demo on the benefits of Botox! Guests left with a goodie bag of treats from Big Hair Do sponsor, KMS, and big smiles on their faces.”

“As the final balloons were blown up, a queue was forming outside the Trevor Sorbie salon, ready for the Big Hair Do, Covent Garden style. Charlotte Tilbury makeup gurus were on hand to provide makeovers, while skincare experts from Kiehls provided hand massages and skin mapping as guests enjoyed Big Hair Do cupcakes and Asian inspired nibbles. There was also complimentary eyebrow threading and fragrance profiling from Miller Harris. And then, the hair! Super stylists were on hand to give quick tips and fringe trims, and the braid bar was a roaring success, creating every kind of plait under the sun. The colour lab provided consultations for anyone thinking of swapping up their shades, and there were plenty of discounts on products, so guests could take a little bit of the Big Hair Do home with them. Big Hair Do, done!”

“I spent such a gorgeous evening with the Andrew Smith crew at their Big Hair Do event in Fareham, Hampshire. Handed a glass of chilled bubbly on arrival by boss man, Andrew, I felt instantly welcome and ready to party! The guys had signed up to the Big Hair Do quite late on, but even though that meant theirs was a relatively low-key affair (compared to some!), the demonstrations, product advice and styling expertise on hand was totally WOW. I learned how to ‘Lazy Wave’ my hair (an Andrew Smith signature technique – and my kind of wave!) using the Hot Tools Professional Curl Bar –made with 24 karat gold for smooth, kind-to-hair and lasting looks (it even vibrates periodically meaning you get totally even results – genius!). A complete revelation – and my stylist, Sam’s (pictured) go-to tool! All around me guests were being pampered and prettified – there was Dermalogica face and skin mapping, step-by-step demos of looks from London Fashion Week (Andrew Smith is responsible for crafting the looks worn for up and coming designer, Chanel Joan Elkayam’s shows) – plus, I overheard some pretty awesome tips, too (how to “feed” hair into your straightener to avoid those nasty dents – why the way you loop hair around the barrel of a tong can determine the shape of the wave or curl. All GREAT client counsel, people!). And I feel in love with team member Ellen’s self-styled ‘faux fishtail’ – I WILL be trying to recreate this at home… Raising money for the British Red Cross (Andrew recently experienced a house fire – and was blown away by the help he received by the organisation), the salon threw a raffle, too, with prizes ranging from Hot Tools Professional products and watches, to bags, bath time treats and chocolates. A really lovely finish to a rather fabulous ’do. ”
