Charles Worthington: THIS is how you win the L’Oréal Colour Trophy

Charles in charge… of finding a L’Oréal Colour Trophy winner

We’ve got some insider trading for you! A true industry icon, Charles Worthing MBE – one of the judges of the 2016 L’Oréal Colour Trophy – tells us what he’s looking for in a winning entry…

How many years have you been judging
L’Oréal Colour Trophy?
“More than 20 years now and it is always a highlight in my calendar to play a part in such a prestigious event in our industry.”

Why do you encourage your staff to get involved – what do you think it brings to their career/skill set?
“It teaches hairdressers to come out of their comfort zone, to experiment new techniques and stretch themselves creatively and to think outside the box to develop new and inspirational future trends.”

What do you look for in an entry?
“I look for hair that has a fresh, new, inspired look; it must be well executed in all aspects of colour, cut and finish, and both directional and wearable.”

What are the most common mistakes entrants make?
“Over styling or under styling is a no-no… remember it’s the styling and finish that sells the final look to the judges, so this needs to be executed to perfection to show off your skillful colour and cut. The colour may be technically exceptional but if the styling is rushed and isn’t well-finished, this can effect the final result.”

What would be your key pieces of advice to anyone entering?
“Be careful with choice of model – they need to sell your look and they must have good quality hair, so don’t compromise as this is the essential starting point.

Follow your heart and your natural instinct for your look, and try not to be influenced by what others are doing. That way you’re being true to yourself, so whatever happens you can be proud of your work.

Preparation really is key to success, so the more you do, the more likely you are to succeed… good luck!”
