People then hair!
This personal project was an homage to my barbering roots. I street cast all the guys, cut their hair the week before and gave them £50 (it’s all I had!) to stay out all night, not go to bed and come to Whitechapel at 9am the next morning to be photographed. I wanted to capture each subject as raw, unconsidered individuals. None of them was a model; I chose them for their character, not their look. The story was immediately published in i-D magazine when Terry Jones (the founder and publisher) saw the polaroids and got in touch. I’ll never forget the feeling I had after taking that call!
