Couture shows are unashamedly opulent, and the sky-high hair styled by Guido Palau for Redken, with colour by Josh Wood, at Valentino Couture Fall 2018 was fit for a princess…

As the saying goes “the higher the hair, the closer to God“, and the Valentino Couture Fall 2018 show, with its angelic models adorned in feathers and bouffants reaching up to heaven, certainly proved that point.
“The big hair at Valentino was inspired by extravagance,” explains Redken global creative director, Guido, who styled the look. “Pierpaolo [Piccioli, Valentino’s designer] and I were looking at a ‘60s Diana Vreeland and Harper’s Bazaar shoots: these women who had this glorious, dream hair. It’s fantasy hair that women dream about.”
It was Guido who created the towering hairstyles, but it was down to Redken global color creative director, Josh Wood, and his team to colour the 50 wigs used to plump up the hair. The shades were described by Josh Wood as having a “dark chocolate bourbon-y base with soft, rich tea ends”, and it took his team 150 hours to prepare the hair pieces for just six models.
But it was all worth it when supermodel Kaia Gerber (yes, that’s Cindy C’s daughter) floated down the runway in pink feathers and the hugest hair imaginable, showing that old-school glamour is still very much alive. Delicious!
Here’s Guido’s step-by-step guide to creating the super-sized look…
Prep hair by washing with Redken All Soft Mega Shampoo and Conditioner.
Create a section from the hairline to crown behind the ear.
Blow-dry hair with a round brush using Redken Guts 10 in five larger sections until fully dry.
Wig-wrap the back of your head. Set in a few additional hairpieces for added, oversized volume.
Attach padding to the nape and the crown.
Secure pieces into the padding using bobby pins.
Back-comb the pieces with Redken Wind Blown 05 for added texture and volume.
Smooth and finish hair with Redken Forceful 23 Hairspray to hold the look.
