Salon owner and Fresha partner Anil Salhan launched BLACC + BLOND just four months before the start of the pandemic with the dream of becoming the UK’s first carbon and gender-neutral salon in the UK. Fast-forward two years and business is booming for BLACC + BLOND.

“Opening months before the pandemic wasn’t what I had in mind, but we used that time to focus on our business ethics, our morals and the culture that we wanted to create. Thankfully, we’ve come out the other side as one of the pioneers of a new era for the hair industry,” he says.

A pioneering business concept

Birmingham-based BLACC + BLOND may be a hair salon, but Anil and his team wanted to take the business into new territory. “I always say that we’re more of a people brand or a societal brand. We like to make people feel good and look good, and we try to do good ourselves by working towards becoming both carbon and gender-neutral.”

Anil sees the team’s efforts of offering gender-neutral appointments as a way of promoting equality within the hair industry. “We charge one rate for all our clients, regardless of gender, because we give everyone the same amount of time. Men deserve the same time, and women deserve the same price. Everyone is equal,” he explains.

BLACC + BLOND has succeeded in creating gender equality within their salon, but they are not slowing down – they also have big plans to fulfil their sustainability goals. Last year, on Wild Earth Day, they launched an initiative called ‘Green is the New Black’ with phenomenal success. “We wanted to plant a tree for every new client,” Anil explains. “We aimed to plant 1,000 trees in a year, but we actually planted 3,000. We’re really proud of this.”

Full steam ahead

The unique vision and salon concept behind BLACC + BLOND, paired with its talented team, is really helping to driving its success. It doesn’t stop there though; Anil is thinking beyond the salon walls and looking to digital for further growth. He is quick to praise Fresha’s subscription-free business software for helping to take everything to the next level: “Using Fresha is one of the best decisions we’ve made. Income protection in a challenging climate

All businesses have faced challenges post-pandemic, and Anil credits Fresha for helping to grow and protect incomes at BLACC + BLOND during this testing time. “In the current climate cancellations are rife, so being able to set our own cancellation policy on Fresha has helped the business – not just to survive but to grow. I could count on one hand the amount of no shows that we’ve had in the last year, which is not only testament to our skill set, but also to Fresha as well. Fresha’s integrated payment system is amazing as well, as it allows us to take contactless payments with ease at the end of appointments.”

Anil sees Fresha reviews as another added value Fresha brings to BLACC + BLOND. “We get a lot more reviews on Fresha than any other platform and new clients definitely read them. Fresha reviews have been really good for us.”

To sustain their success, Anil and the BLACC + BLOND team are continually evolving and looking for new and innovative ways to adapt, including their efforts in gender equality or the environment. In this, he sees Fresha as a vital partner to their success: “Fresha is aligned with my way of thinking. They’re constantly trying new things and always updating and evolving.
