Celebrity hairstylist Dallin James creates a cool girl ponytail for actress Stephanie Hsu at the Critics’ Choice Awards
One of 2022’s break-out stars, Stephanie Hsu has become a much more familiar face on screens of the nation. Having begun her career in the theatre, Stephanie is best known for starring in Prime Video’s The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel and her more recent role in the Russo Brothers’ adventure sci-fi Everything Everywhere All at Once.
With over 30 nominations for Everything Everywhere All at Once across various award shows, it was for her Best Supporting Actress nomination that Stephanie attended the Critics’ Choice Awards.
In the very capable hands of hairstylist Dallin James, Stephanie sported the snatched ponytail. Before deciding on the look, Dallin considered the outfit for the evening and how best to compliment the tangerine gown. “Stephanie has pretty long hair, and quite a bit of it, so we are always trying different ways to find balance based on her proportions and what she is wearing,” Dallin shares. “For Critics’ Choice, she decided on a Valentino haute couture gown with her shoulders exposed, so we wanted to keep everything lifted and off her shoulders. The team and I decided on a low knotted ponytail to keep the hair looking clean and fresh with a little bit of texture through the ends.”
Get the look
Step one: Prep the hair by using Hairstory Dressed Up Heat Protection Lotion, layering in from mid-shaft to the ends. Mix in a few drops of the Hairstory Hair Oil to add a little bit of slip and moisture to the hair.
Step two: Section by section, apply the Hairstory Lift Volumizing Spray – just at the root – and pull each section into the direction of the ponytail to keep it locked in place. This makes snatching the pony tail a lot easier when it comes to securing it with an elastic.
Step three: After the ponytail is set, used a small amount of Hairstory Wax on your fingers to twist a big section of hair around the ponytail, giving it a knot-like appearance.
Step four: Go in with a little bit of the Hairstory Wax and a toothbrush around the hairline, if necessary, to smooth down any baby hairs.
Step five: Flat-iron some loose S waves through the lengths of the pony.
Step six: To finish the look, mist the hair with Hairstory Undressed Hair Texturizing Spray to give it a textured finish.
