Amid the grand backdrop of Vienna, Goldwell bids goodbye to the 17 year old Color Zoom competition. Get ready for exciting new changes…
About 3,000 hairdressers descended onto the Austrian capital Vienna for what turned out to be the final Global Zoom event, including the Color Zoom competition, from Goldwell. Bringing together finalists from more than 37 countries, the dramatic finale saw new champions crowned in all three categories. Irakli Sardalishvili of Russia was awarded Gold for the Creative Category. After last year’s clean sweep by The Netherlands, Singapore almost managed the same with stylists J Lim winning New Talent Gold and Yuujin Ho awarded Gold for the Partner Category.

Don’t worry, the UK contingency didn’t go away empty-handed. All three finalists – Courtney Cairns from Headromance in Havant (New Talent UK Gold winner), Lauren Roma Hanlon from Slunks in Cardiff (Creative Category UK Gold winner) and Richard Munslow of Toni&Guy Hemel Hempstead (Partner Category UK Gold winner) – swept the board for the public-voted Stylists’ Choice awards.

The Grand Final kicked off with a Viennese whirl of action, with dancers in traditional costumes flitting between Mozart and Rock Me Amadeus. The first hair looks of the night came courtesy of Mario Krankl, whose candyfloss-stacked, Marie Antoinette constructions featured baby limbs, bird cages and rosettes set in the towering hairpieces. Corey Couts, president of KAO Salons Global, kicked off proceedings, after the procession of artists and their models. “They jumped in, they created, they participated. There’s no greater bravery than placing your art forward to be judged,” Corey cheered.
Next to the stage was John Moroney, vice president and creative director of KAO Salon Division, Goldwell and KMS, who announced the location for 2020’s global event – vibrant Amsterdam, chosen for its synergy with Goldwell’s blend of colour, culture and community.
John then announced that this would be the final Global Zoom, making way for a brand new KAO Salon Division Experience event from 2020, featuring the Goldwell Global Creative Awards. “As our family evolves, we want to better celebrate our creativity, celebrate our culture and celebrate our community,” John explained. The new event will see a shake-up of the existing colour awards, the introduction of a haircutting award, as well as the introduction of brand new editorial categories, which include avant-garde and men’s styling.
John then introduced the first new collection for Goldwell’s revamped look – the new Couture collection, titled Intrepid. The mix of male and female cuts and colours featured a mix of textures and colour melts, sleek, rounded shapes that hugged the head. The Couture collection culminated in sculptural silhouettes of hair masks which disguised intricate plaiting, sleek ponytails or long, tumbling ringlets, all created by the Goldwell Artistic Team and 2018 Global Zoom winners.
