It’s all in the tech…

Today, you can invest in the re-engineered Dyson Supersonic hair dryer Professional edition . Here’s how it evolved from a bunch of problems to solve to a beautiful, high-performing hair dryer…

James Dyson didn’t want to just create another hair dryer. That’s no challenge. His engineers wanted to solve problems. But they had a long way to go…

So, to truly understand the science of hair, Dyson created hair science laboratories with originally-designed rigs and machines to test repeatedly. Over four years, 103 Dyson engineers including scientists and stylists looked at everything from airflow dynamics to hair’s cellular structure, testing nearly 1,625 kilometres of hair in the process.

The team examined healthy and damaged hair using electron microscopes and light chambers to understand how light reflects from the hair. The research showed that with extreme heat the structures within the hair become damaged and this results in hair that is weaker and less shiny, the light scattering off the hair rather than reflecting evenly.

That’s the hair; what about the salon? It was vital that engineers test its prototypes in both laboratories and the environments they’re developed for. Extensive research gathered airborne contaminants data from salons (Hairspray! Towel fibres! Hair clippings!) and some of the typical behaviours seen by stylists around the globe.

It’s been a root to tip project, and so far Dyson has invested £75 million in the development of the Dyson Supersonic. From test rigs which mechanically simulate hair drying techniques, to machines that test the strength and elasticity of individual hair strands, it’s been a deep dive.

And with the feedback of hundreds of stylists from around the globe, the engineers didn’t stop at the first Dyson Supersonic released. “To design a hair dryer for professionals, our engineers first had to understand the working environments and habits of hair stylists globally. Over two years, the team optimised and re-engineered the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer,” explains Tom Crawford, Dyson’s global research and development director, personal care. So far, 178 prototypes have been worked through for the new professional edition alone. Perseverance has led to perfection!
