After travelling the world as a hairdresser, Thiago Santos now calls Number 5 Andrew Street in Dublin his salon home. He talks education, motivation and more

You can say that Thiago Santos, a hairdresser for the past 25 years, has made the rounds with experience working in several countries including France, Portugal, the US and now Dublin. Here, he tells Creative HEAD Ireland about his journey so far.
CH: Tell us about your educational background…
TS: I’m proud to say that I’m a graduate of several academies including TONI&GUY, Vidal Sassoon, and HOB Academy in London and Alexandre de Paris across the Channel in Paris.
CH: Your career has taken you around the world. Can you share a bit of that timeline?
TS: In 2015 I opened my salon in São Paulo, Brazil. Then in 2020, I moved to Portugal where I became a Keune technician. Then my next big challenge arrived, to manage an incredible salon, Number 5 Andrew Street located in Dublin, a city that is now close to my heart. I am passionate about the care we give to our clients here.
CH: What would you like to improve on in your career?
TS: I have learned that dedicating too much time to managing the salon can drain my creative side. It is crucial to strike a balance between helping to run the business and nurturing my creativity.
CH: What defines you as a stylist? Are you a specialist or all-rounder?
TS: I used to believe that focusing on one aspect of our profession, such as being solely a colourist or just cutting hair, was enough. However, I now understand the importance of being a well-rounded professional who can excel in various aspects, and it brings me joy to transform my clients’ looks in every way.
CH: What is the secret to a successful career in hairdressing?
TS: Dedication, resilience, willpower, and continuous training are essential qualities for success in this industry.
CH: What is something you need to get better at?
TS: I now recognise the importance of exercise and taking care of my personal health. It’s something I need to work on, namely getting used to maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
CH: What is something that you’ll never give up?
TS: Education! I have been a hairdresser for 25 years but my enthusiasm for learning remains akin to that of a beginner. I constantly enrol in hairdressing courses to study and specialise in new techniques. I am also determined not to let go of my creativity.
