Meet the artist: Louis Byrne

I Can – it’s literally written in the Louis Byrne playbook. No stranger to inventiveness, when a Creative HEAD project arose with an open brief, he was our go-to guy. A unique video assignment, presented in partnership with BaByliss PRO, Artists in Session is about giving hairdressing creatives a chance to celebrate their individual, artistic and signature style. Louis, the floor is yours…

“As an artist I tend to work with strong women that have a strong identity for themselves. And I help to enhance that” Louis Byrne

Louis Byrne has come a long way since his hairdressing beginnings in Northampton. Four years assisting the legendary session stylist Sam McKnight and countless fashion weeks saw his career skyrocket, with jobs for Vogue, ELLE and L’Officiel and a lengthy stint with singer Ellie Goulding as her personal stylist.

Louis counts an impressive number of actresses, musicians, models and entertainment industry giants among his starry clientele and when he’s not residing at John Frieda Ibiza, where he is creative director, he can be found jetting around on the session circuit; one memorable week featured a private jet, prepping a client for a  performance for Donatella Versace and a gig on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury!

Recently, Louis launched a very special project, I Can I Am And I Will. Driven by personal empowerment and using social media as a platform for positivity, he captures stories via film and photography, featuring an array of people from street-cast models to diverse individuals and celebrities (such as long-time client Emma Willis and actress Vicky McClure) that he finds inspirational.

Most of the people featured have a story to tell – cancer survivors (such as Helen Addis, aka @tittygritty), travellers, adventurers – and the raw, uncompromising and yet defiantly upbeat photographs, taken in London, Lisbon and Ibiza, serve to show how much hair is part of one’s identity and strength. This is just one example of Louis’s sensitivity to others, and his unmatched drive for authenticity in everything he does.

A calm but cheerful presence on set, Louis seems able to see through to the core of someone and bring it to the surface through his work. Whether it’s tapping into elements of a character for a high fashion shoot, or helping celebrities feel at ease and full of confidence, his deft touch is all about presenting an authentic, empowering truth through his work.

I’d define my creative style as… Free and inquisitive and a little bit naughty.

I’m inspired by… Having an open mind, living in the moment, and embracing fear, flipping it on its head and going for it.

People who have impacted my career include… Those that have been brave enough to share their powerful empowerment stories with ICanIAmandIWill. And my Aunty Val, where my passion for hair started.

One standout memory I have is… Creating the I Can I Am and I Will January wellness campaign for ITV’s Lorraine Show.

If it hadn’t been for hair, I wouldn’t have… Hair has been a huge part of my life from as long as I can remember! So, I guess I wouldn’t be the person I am today!

If I had one piece of advice it would be… Learn your craft, empower yourself and really enjoy every minute.
