The year 2020 has been a challenging one for us all, but professional hairdressers and salon owners are amongst those who have been hit the hardest, at least commercially, by the consequences of Covid-19 – shutting up shop for prolonged periods, and with work of any kind grinding to an agonising (and in some cases devastating) halt.
London salon owners and successful businesswomen Gina Conway and Skyler McDonald have experienced it all – but, like many, they’ve fought through by operating strategically, capitalising on downtime and staying positive. And they’re ready to talk about it in ‘Then and Now’ – series two of The Root of It podcast.
These inspiring women have been powering through the year in fight mode, working harder than ever to keep their businesses afloat (“It was just like a game of the balance of the cashflow”, admits Skyler). If there’s anyone who knows how to make the most out of a pandemic situation, hands down, ladies and gentlemen, it’s Gina and Skyler. They refused to keep their guests waiting, instead providing customised home colour kits to use while their doors remained closed. They’ve reorganised and restructured internal systems and they’ve redecorated and upgraded client spaces. This pioneering pair represents resilience on a grand scale, and we salute them for it.
But there’s a lot more to learn from – and about – these firm friends. Both emigrated from the USA to follow their dreams, going on to develop strong, successful brands. For Skyler, this meant taking a big risk by opening the UK’s first-ever colour-only salon – for Gina, building a trio of award-winning salons and spas with sustainability at their core.
