Moving from a five-seater to a 18-seat salon is a sign that you’re doing something right. Daryl McGrath and Barbara Monahan, co-owners of KULT Hairdressing in Limerick’s Newcastle West, share more from recent expansion.
How did KULT Hairdressing come about originally?
We have both been professional hairdressers from a very young age, and always working for someone else. We crossed paths in 2014 and very quickly became great colleagues, friends and, more importantly, realised we had a similar goal; we wanted to open our own salon.
Through many conversations, planning and with what sometimes felt like an impossible dream, our long-awaited venture came to fruition in October 2018 when KULT was established. We knew we worked well together. We knew we both had a passion for all things hair, from teaching to styling, but the uncertainty of what lay ahead was definitely on our minds and caused a lot of sleepless nights. We opened with five sections and three staff which included both ourselves and today we have 18 sections and a staff of nine.
Talk us through the interiors of the new salon…
We knew the type of salon we wanted. We are both very calm and friendly by nature and wanted the salon to represent that, while making sure it was very welcoming to everyone and an environment that allows an escape for all.
Our colour scheme is black, white and natural wood. We added foliage to bring the outdoors in and our cockatoo light fixture takes pride of place above reception. Not forgetting our stag head who has been with us from day one and has developed into what we now associate as our logo.
Barbara’s dad and brother along with her husband fitted out the whole salon. Richard Barry from Xpert Professional supplied the basins, chairs and some of our sections from PAHL and TAKUMI.
What does the salon specialise in?
We specialise in all hair types, from colouring, cutting, bridal and extensions. We stock many brands including ALFAPARF Milano Professional colour, and ALFAPARF Milano Professional Semi di Lino and Style Stories, R+Co and Great Lengths.
Our clients old and new are the core of our business and why we are what we’ve become. We value every person that comes through our door and strive to ensure they always leave having a good experience and hair that suits.
Our staff help to make our salon a great work environment and share our common goal to grow, succeed and represent the KULT of all things hair.
