Looking for staff? Last October a landmark ad campaign launched, designed to change people’s perceptions about a career in hairdressing – and you can be involved!
We know how rewarding a career in hairdressing can be – but the public? They think hairdressing is something you do only when other options don’t work out. We need to start changing people’s minds!
Not ‘Just’ A Hairdresser is a TV and social media ad campaign that directly challenged out-of-date misconceptions about hairdressing. Starring 12 real-life hair pros working in a range of different environments, the campaign demonstrated the success, variety, skill, diversity, entrepreneurialism and innovation in hairdressing now.
Not ‘Just’ A Hairdresser launched on TV channel E4 during the first episode of The Big Blow Out, the Bake Off-style hairdressing competition hosted by AJ Odudu and judges Sam McKnight and Lisa Farrall. Adverts also appeared in the following three episodes of the series.
Simultaneously, a social media campaign, featuring all 12 hairdressers talking about their careers, played out on Instagram and YouTube.
Over on the-industry.co.uk, those interested can meet all the case studies, find out how to get started in hairdressing and get connected to salons looking to hire apprentices.

Create your own Not ‘Just’ A Hairdresser video!
We describe each of our case studies with three different words or phrases summing up the different roles hairdressers play on a daily basis.
Choose three words that sum up some of the roles you play. For example:
Confidence Builder, Counsellor, Positive Force
CEO, Creative Director, Brand Manager
Community Leader, Eco-Warrior, Force for Change
In your usual work environment, film yourself saying your three words to camera and end with the words: “I’m not just a hairdresser”.
Publish your clip on your social media channels tagging @theindustrysquad and using #ThinkHairdressing. If you like you can also use the I’m Not ‘Just’ A Hairdresser graphic, which you can download here.
