The days of one-size-fits-all highlights and all-over colour are long gone. Instead, clients want colour that’s just for them; shades that suits their skin tone and personality, and can’t be easily copied.
Rainbow Room International’s Suzie McGill and Dylan Brittain noticed this trend getting bigger earlier this year and started looking at how to give the client what they wanted.
The Colour Spill technique was the result and was created by the duo in response to the need to give clients a tailor-made look. “Individualism is a huge trend this year and the Colour Spill technique is perfect for everyone, in their own way,” they say.
The inspiration for the technique came from an oil spill, but “we didn’t want to refrain it to one specific colour palette, so we started looking at spills in general and it gave us a much broader spectrum to work on, looking at how colours diffuse, then disperse or mix together”, they add.
The technique, Suzie and Dylan argue, ensures you can meet clients’ individual upkeep needs, taking into account what compliments the client’s skin tone, eye colour and personal preferences.
“Use geometric sectioning and relaxed colour application with precise colour choices to disperse colour beautifully through the hair, creating your very own ‘colour spill’,” they say.
Suzie and Dylan suggest going as bold or as subtle as you like, but below is one example of a colour spill they did recently for the salon’s latest collection.
STEP ONE
Hair was prelightened with Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME Bond Enforcing Premium Lightener.
STEP TWO
For the root, we used Schwarzkopf Professional Pink Igora Colorworx and diluted it with 10 parts Schwarzkopf Professional White Igora Colorworx to one part Schwarzkopf Professional Pink Igora Colorworx to create depth in the root.
STEP THREE
It was then spilled it out to tone with the Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME Instant Blush Strawberry, Ice and Apricot to create a rose tone that spills out to the ends.
STEP FOUR
We then used Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME Rose Gold and Warm Gold on the ends to spill out, adding depth to the root.
