A driving force of PAINT is the hope that colourists will collaborate and share with each other, working together as a collective to boost skills, services and technical confidence… and we have our talented panel on hand to get the party started. Online and here, this council of colourists will contribute ideas, opinions, formulas, techniques and so much more. As the newest team player, allow us to introduce… Guest PAINTER, Betty Blades, a star of Pulp Riot’s Riot Squad
“My name is Laura AKA @Betty_blades and I will be taking over from my good friend Loretta. My joining the industry was a natural progression from my love of art and passion of expressing yourself through your appearance. Over my 15 year career, I have worked multiple roles and forged myself a reputation as a creative colourist.
My favourite thing about the job is formulating for a big colour correction. Although the work is tiring, there is nothing better than the smiles from your clients and feeling like you’ve somehow solved some impossible equation. Art is life.
I was planning on introducing myself more this first column but I had a more thrilling theme in mind. What’s exciting me right now is the UK launch of the Raven Collection, a range made by Pulp Riot’s resident witch Kasey O’Hara.
While waiting in anticipation for the collection to drop in the UK, I had to chance to get an exclusive look behind the scenes of how and why the new shades have been created.
I remembered seeing a video of Kasey on the floor mixing multiple shades on a large sheet and finding it really interesting. It reminded me of why I love to paint hair, so I reached out to Kasey to ask her a little bit about it.
Like myself, she is a big goth at heart and has a love for the culture and video games. She found her inspiration for these shades while travelling Europe with Pulp Riot’s co-founders Alexis and David.
She wanted to create a real grunge vibe that still celebrates colour, while incorporating the shades others were trying to create in the salon from various tubes.

There’s five new shades to seduce you:
- Nemesis – A denim blue which has an underlying purple tone.
- Nevermore – A muted purple inspired by Edgar Allen Poe, perfect for those of us who like to make holographic rainbows.
- Cleopatra – A rose gold or muted peach
- Aftermath – A sage green
- Countess – A deep pink red which Kasey refers to as ‘vampire red’ – it’s the shade I’ve been waiting for!
Ahead of the UK launch, Pulp Riot gathered some awesome artists to give them first dibs and formulate, followed by a demo from our resident witch Heather Mackenzie, who demonstrated her new water colour technique.”
The Raven Collection is available in available now from Salons Direct, Aston & Fincher, Capital Hair and Beauty and Alan Howard.
