Fresh, relevant, real and different – a genius onstage pairing of current It Girl Rebecca Chang and Most Wanted Hair Trend winner Sam Burnett delivered a creative tour de force at our 2018 Coterie: In Session event. The two stylists not only shared techniques and inspirational insight from their experiences at shoots and shows, but also perfectly demonstrated today’s easy fluidity between the salon and session worlds.
Hosted by journalist and beauty expert Sophie Qureshi in an East London photographic studio, the event had a real on-set feel, with a packed-out audience (including Syd Hayes, Siobhan Jones, AJ Blackadder and Karbon Kyd) able to see every detail. The crowd watched closely, as Sam and Rebecca demoed everything from 70s-inspired volume and texture to braiding techniques picked up from Eugene Souleiman, while Sophie fired questions about the opportunities and challenges of life backstage.
Sam’s first look – the ‘Anti Gravity Pony’ – was a feat of genius, featuring zero bands and held only with product! For look two, he re-invented rik-rak, using elastic to set and create the perfect bend, before brushing it out to form show-stopping texture.
Combining Japanese architectural influences with references to sculptures by Constantin Brâncusi and paintings by Mark Rothko, Rebecca’s looks incorporated braiding techniques she learned from Eugene Souleiman backstage at Jil Sander’s SS18 show. She also demonstrated an ingenious ‘chiselling’ cutting technique she’s honed, to shape a beautifully blunt fringe.
For a fun and spontaneous finale – inspired by hair accessories spotted on the Spring/Summer runways – Sophie tasked Rebecca and Sam to: “create a cool style for a summer event (be that a day at the races, a wedding or a chic garden party) that uses an accessory (or accessories!) to show-stopping effect.”
The pair had just six minutes to whip up a look, and the audience voted for their favourite creation with a show of hands. Regardless of the result, both artists rocked it!
It was exciting, provocative, thrilling stuff – a masterclass that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Our thanks go to BaByliss PRO, who not only sponsored the event but ensured everyone went home with a goody bag containing tool-of-the-moment; a 38mm Titanium Expression tong.
