About Skyler McDonald

Texas-born Skyler got her first taste of life behind the chair while working a Saturday job in her local salon. She went on to study marketing at university in Houston, but after one semester – always drawn towards art and creativity, and inspired by style magazines and the London scene – Skyler packed her bags and headed to the bustling capital to follow her passion for hair and fashion.

It’s a hard concept, it’s very risky and we did it in huge premises. You do have to have huge balls for it.Skyler McDonald

In 2008, Skyler joined acclaimed salon group, seanhanna – taking a position in Canary Wharf. After only four years, she was appointed group artistic director and moved to the Wimbledon branch, where she quickly made a name for herself in the industry and began to build an impressive celebrity client list. In 2013, she took on the role of resident hairdresser for the television show Last Chance Salon, where she used her expertise to help individuals overcome extreme hair and beauty disasters.

Instrumental in the growth of seanhanna’s education and colour businesses, in 2017 Skyler left the company to launch a new salon under her own name, to huge acclaim. Skyler London opened as the UK’s first ever colour-only salon with a team of carefully picked colour specialists, recruited and trained by Skyler herself, providing innovative colour services to clients and advanced, standardised technical education for her staff as well as external students.

Skyler demonstrated further business vision with the hugely successful introduction of a pioneering salon subscription programme, the ‘Kaleidoscope Club’, offering clients unlimited colour visits every month for a fixed monthly payment.

Listen to Skyler and Gina – two highly successful businesswomen – exchanging experiences about taking risks, driving change, finding balance – and winning at life! All this and more in Then and Now – the third and final episode in series two of The Root of It podcast.
