SELF/STYLED Sunday: shining a light on new ways of working

by | Apr 4, 2022 | News, Self Employment, SELF/STYLED Business, SELF/STYLED SUNDAYS

SELF/STYLED Sunday was live and kicking on Sunday 3 April, with three very different sessions that all examined how solo hair professionals can make more money by looking at freelancing with fresh eyes

SELF/STYLED Sunday once again delivered on educational and inspirational content for freelance hairdressers to help them learn, earn and grow.

Fresh colour techniques! A peek into the world of home salons! A fascinating discussion about how solo artists can build their careers through team pursuits! Not to mention an exclusive discount code from our event partners Aston & Fincher for live viewers to enjoy…

There was so much to cover but we’ve picked out our highlights below. You can watch the full sessions on our Facebook page here.

Closer To Home

Kenlee Taylor founded Home Salons UK to try and educate and support the growing number of people looking to change their way of working and integrate a salon space into a private residence. More than that, she’s passionate about ensuring home salon owners feel empowered to provide the same levels of service that high street salons do.

From developing business skills, content banking and getting to grips with admin, to maintaining inspiration and education plans (and remembering to pay yourself a salary!), Kenlee outlined how to make owning a home salon a reality. “It only needs to start with an idea, and as long as you have a plan you can get there,” she explained.

“Trust me, you’ll get there. You’ll learn to wear all the hats – barista, social media marketer, front of house AND hairdresser… but remember, success is being happy and content and having a life outside of your business.”

Solo Success in a Team Setting

Talk about a meeting of minds! Featuring the exceptional talents of Fae Hammond (Emmy award-winning film hair and make-up designer), Dionne Smith (editorial queen on speed-dial for celebs and magazines alike) and Craig Chapman (Hairdotcom Art Team founder and TV hair wizard), our Panel Talk focused on the way each of them have been able to develop their own solo profiles through work that requires teamwork.

On the topic of standing out in the team environment, Dionne explained that the love of your craft and continually honing it really pays off in terms of skills and visibility.

“As long as you’re doing your best, that’s all you can do,” she said. “If you’re not seen today, you WILL get seen tomorrow. Don’t lose heart – people are watching, opportunity will arise and not everybody gets their light at the same time!”

No matter the setting – red carpet looks, styling judges on The Voice or assembling a cohesive vision for a film – each of them stressed how key it is to find your tribe, and also to provide opportunities for the younger generation of freelancers. “Your family extends,” explained Craig. “There’s no greater pleasure than growing your career and knowing you can help lift people up to run alongside you.”

The Joy of Colouring

For his Colour Masterclass, Alan Edwards and his team treated viewers to FOUR fantastic twists on classic techniques to help spark some new ideas for your clients’ next look. Using the full spectrum of L’Oréal Professionnel Paris products, from prepping with Metal Detox to the many colour formulation choices and finishing with Tecni.ART, Alan certainly succeeded in getting viewers excited about playing with placements and finishes.

Utilising four models, Alan and his fellow Colour Specialists demonstrated a quartet of techniques that:

  • transformed a globally lightened blonde into a sliced, ‘00s-inspired high-contrast look
  • elevated a single tone/grey blending client with pops of surface-painted lightener
  • dialled a third client’s weaved highlights up to ‘90s, chunky, negative space look
  • took a blonde into a new dusty pink pastel palette

He was keen to stress how key the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Specialist course has been in building his team’s confidence in colour knowledge, allowing them to play with and break the rules without having to worry about how the hair will react.

Our next SELF/STYLED Sunday event is taking place on 29 May and you can sign up to be the first to hear about it right here.
