The secrets of freelance success were spilled left, right and centre yesterday to an eager online audience as the final SELF/STYLED Sunday of 2021 took place. Shhhh, we’ll let you in on the goss…
SELF/STYLED’s digital event series had one last outing before the end of 2021, with freelance hair professionals up and down the UK tuning in to hear expert advice from a trio of true creatives.
The morning kicked off with multi-award winning stylist Jonathan Andrew, in conversation with SELF/STYLED editor Deborah Murtha, with a Masterclass on ‘Beyond Retail’. Designed to empower freelancers to think more proactively and positively about the retail opportunities they have, Jonathan discussed the power of professional recommendations, and also the doors that retail have opened for him as global ambassador for Fudge Professional. Retail is a key tool in your arsenal to show just how switched on you are to wider trends, from high fashion through to celebrity styles your clients dream of emulating. “Just because you’re an expert in cutting hair, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be an expert in everything we do… I’ve always looked at products as tools, as being as important as anything else in my kitbag,” Jonathan explained.
Next up, hairy godmother himself Ben Lifton, founder of Content Kweens, took a deep-dive into the winning digital content strategies for ‘Content that Converts’. Ben channelled all of his experience (he’s educated over 2000 hair professionals thus far!) into an action-packed hour where he broke down key advice for scheduling and content creation, time-saving hacks and the importance of content marketing. “It’s not all about the likes,” said Ben, explaining the difference between ‘outreach’ and ‘nurturing’ content. “It’s also about showing what you do, to get people to convert once they’re hooked in – pricing, processes and day-in-the-life. It’s lather rinse repeat: get them interested, get them in the chair, get them coming back!”
Rounding out the November SELF/STYLED Sunday, we turned to a true colour genius: Clayde Baumann. As Global Colour Director of D&J Ambrose and one of Wella Professionals’ top artists, Clayde knows the ins and outs of creating colour that captivates clients’ attention. His ‘True Grey’ Masterclass showcased the untapped potential of grey hair with the latest launch from Wella Professionals. Viewers were treated to three looks, created using the new True Grey products and Silver Glow services which had everyone buzzing with excitement at the potential of this new client market. “This is not being marketed as a colour service,” Clayde explained. “It’s a conditioning treatment that happens to have pigment in it because the goal is to make the natural colour look its best.”
Ticket holders were treated to discounts from our brilliant event partner Aston & Fincher, as well as the chance of winning bespoke digital education with Ben Lifton of Content Kweens, as a small token of our thanks for the support SELF/STYLED Sundays has received this year.
We’ll see you next year for yet more freelance-focused, fascinating education with SELF/STYLED Sundays. Our next event is on 30 January, and you can sign up to be the first to hear about tickets HERE.
