The Coterie: In Session – on-set hair to in-salon styles

Jonathan DeFrancesco The Coterie in Session

Last night Creative HEAD welcomed a throng of hairstylists to the very first Coterie: In Session at Hoxton Street Studios in London – a merging of high fashion inspiration and client-friendly styling through discussions and demonstrations from hairdressing experts.

Associate editor (beauty) of Stylist magazine, Joanna McGarry, hosted the evening, which was generously sponsored by BaByliss PRO. First welcomed to the stage in front of a packed audience was session stylist Jonathan De Francesco, who recreated an elegant ponytail he styled as part of Guido’s team for Christian Dior’s Spring Couture 2015 show, all the while revealing some of his best backstage styling tips: “I never use pins to secure the ends of hair – as long as you have a solid strong hairspray you don’t need them.”

Next, celebrity and editorial stylist Claire Rothstein created a glamorous no-heat wave, and told of her ‘less is more’ ethos. “Even when hair is ‘done’, I like there to be an element of effortlessness about it,” she said.

After Jonathan demonstrated his wig cutting techniques, transforming a long wig into a shattered silver bob, it was back to Claire to create a look inspired by the My Burberry campaign featuring Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne. She summed the style up as being “quite simply: great hair” and admitted that “Tongs give just too much of an even finish for this look – you want it to look like she just woke up!”

The two stylists then went head to head in a challenge set by Joanna to create their interpretations of what is arguably one of fashion’s least wearable catwalk styles – the wet look. While they worked, and together with Joanna (who herself had trialled the look for the pages of Stylist), the pair talk about why the look scares consumers and why it keeps returning to the runways. “Layering products is the key to making it wearable for the client,” advised Claire.

To conclude the evening, Creative HEAD editor Amanda Nottage quizzed Joanna, Claire and Jonathan on everything from their fashion loves and hates, to which celebrity they’d most like to get their hands on. The night ended with guests mingling at the packed bar and collecting their goody bags, which contained a BaByliss PRO Titanium Expression Tong.

Said Amanda of the event: The Coterie: In Session is a natural evolution for us, taking that intimate setting that we’re known for and throwing in brilliant hair by exciting stylists, all up close and personal. With Stylist’s Joanna McGarry on hand, it was also a fantastic bridge between session, the salon and the end client. We can’t wait to do more.”

The next Coterie event takes place in Edinburgh on Monday 13 July, with legendary session stylist Sam McKnight. Tickets cost £30 (members go free) and can be purchased here.
