The inside scoop on 2022 trends from SELF/STYLED Sunday

SELF/STYLED Sunday made a welcome return for 2022 on 30 January, and there was one word on everyone’s lips: TRENDS. Here’s a taste of the day, and the topics you should brush up on for the coming months.

January’s the perfect time to brush up on your education, with diaries quiet after Christmas. Enter SELF/STYLED Sunday, with a day full of brilliant education and information for self-employed hair professionals.

The whole day was themed around the trends to know for 2022 – to give you new ideas for colours and services to get your clients excited for the new year and upcoming fashions. Kicking things off with the 2022 Trends Forecast, SELF/STYLED editor Deborah Murtha hosted five tastemakers to discuss their thoughts on THE trends to start brushing up on.

Ashleigh Hodges

Featuring Most Wanted Creative Talent Legend Zoe Irwin, Most Wanted Colour Expert 2021 Ashleigh Hodges, colour queen Sarah Black, Toni&Guy’s Dexter Johnson and celebrity grooming specialist Charley McEwen, it was full of twists on old classics, personalisation and a closer look at the wider cultural aspects which inform trends. “Trends are always a reflection of the world,” explained Ashleigh, using the Devil Wears Prada’s iconic blue jumper scene to evoke the idea of concepts rippling out to affect different aspects of life.

Next up, reigning Most Wanted Creative Talent of the Year and former Most Wanted Colour Expert Paddy McDougall took centre stage. For his Masterclass with Indola, he gave us a glimpse inside how he transitions some of his more extreme catwalk creations into wearable, covetable colour for his everyday clients. “It’s about creating aspirational hair for clients, rather than looks that are technically heavy and inspirational only for your hairdressing peers,” he added.

From a focused approach to blonde regrowth – and the evolution of a look with a client – as well as a sneak peek at a stunning strawberry bob (coming soon to SELF/STYLED!) look, Paddy’s philosophy is centred around offering something of value and interest to the client at all times, whether that’s booking a colour journey in blocks of three appointments, or delving to the core of what it is that interests them.

Nikki Clifford joined us from the Wella Professionals Manchester Studio, joined by technical educator Hayley Austin, to showcase the power of Koleston Perfect Lights, two brand new techniques using Wella’s iconic permanent colour range. Viewers were stunned by the incredible shine Nikki was able to create using the new Koleston Perfect shades, as she treated viewers to three looks.

Shadow Lights and Mirror Lights are two new approaches to grey regrowth and a multi-dimensional high-and-low lights look in next to no time, and there was a lot of focus on how these glossing techniques can be a big seller for all sorts of clients. Even the name sounds enticing!

Money-spinning takes on a trend was definitely the theme for the afternoon, as the day finished with Nancy Stripe‘s Top-Up and Tone Masterclass for L’Oréal Professionnel Paris. Using a simple pivot technique, Nancy was quickly able to show enraptured viewers how to bring a grown-out balayage look back to life, with a helping hand from Metal Detox.

“Don’t over-use product and don’t overspend your time,” she advised, deftly focusing on four quadrants for a quick 30 minute service which will be ideal for clients looking for that freshly-painted feel without the huge bill. “This is delivering just enough impact and is a perfect pop-up appointment to fill gaps in your column,” she advised, explaining how she’d created techniques like this to satisfy her clients while taking back control of her time and her own costs.
