Yesterday evening salons up and down the country came together in the name of great hair for the Big Hair Do 2018 in association with Layered Online and sponsored by hair brands KMS, Redken and TIGI. Braid bars, wave stations, blow-dry bars, colour labs and SOS hair treatments ensued along with a staple dose of bubbly, cupcakes, canapés, selfie stations, retail raffles and even a few butlers in the buff…
From Edinburgh to Exeter, businesses brought out the balloons and spruced up their styling stations, welcoming in clients old and new for an “experience” evening to remember, showcasing the skills of their team and highlighting the abundance of services they have on offer.
“The Express Therapy Zone – where Redken Heat Cure treatments were being given at the backwashes – was absolutely rammed all night”
Big Hair Do veterans Strands Hairdressing in Whiteley demonstrated this perfectly, as reported by Creative HEAD special projects director, Joanna Andersen, who went along to experience the event and appreciated the fact the team had created so many zones and stations for guests to dip in and out of. “The Express Therapy zone – where Redken Heat Cure treatments were being given at the backwashes – was absolutely rammed all night”, she says, “and early on the kids were queuing up at the Glitter Bar with newly styled Boxer Braids.”
Repeat Big Hair Do salon Lisa Hauck Hair & Beauty, London, also returned following the success of previous events with even more on offer, as Creative HEAD Ireland editor Anna Samson found out.
“Lisa Hauck Hair & Beauty has taken part in the Big Hair Do every year, and every year their party gets better and better,” says Anna. “Along with styling tutorials and expert advice, there were braids and product suggestions for clients old and new. And it wasn’t just hair – eyebrow tints were available and clients could indulge in massages and manicures. When it was time to leave, everyone left with a goody bag stuffed full of mini products, a surefire way to tempt them back to the salon. ”
“A lot of the people through the door on the day were actually new, they had seen our Big Hair Do advertised and buzz on social media”
As well as treating existing clients, Big Hair Do provided the opportunity to connect with the local community and attract new customers. “A lot of the people through the door on the day were actually new – they had seen our Big Hair Do advertised and all the buzz on social media,” says salon owner and Big Hair Do participant, Anthony Laban.
“A home care station proved particularly popular with clients, who were able to learn more about how to best manage their hair”
The perfect way to re-engage dormant clients, people flocked to the salons for advice on style updates, lessons in mastering looks from waves to intricate plaits and towering top knots, whilst also getting the low-down on the perfect products to keep their hair in tip top condition.
“A ‘home care station’ proved particularly popular with clients, who were able to learn more about how to best manage their hair,” says Creative HEAD digital assistant Kelsey Dring, who visited Elements in Bishops Stortford and witnessed the locals embracing the opportunity to up their hair knowledge. “Product picks and samples from KMS were available and clients really enjoyed trying them out during their styling sessions.”
Social media was of course abuzz with #BigHairDo action… we’ve chalked up style inspiration to last the long haul!
Alongside solving many a client hair dilemma, Big Hair Do attendees were pampered with a host of extra treats: Ciente in Berkhamsted appealed to tastebuds with some scrumptious looking canapés; Elements collaborated with local business Gin Palace offering a tipple-laden tasting experience; at Whiteman Soho in London a talented guitarist serenaded guests as they were styled; and F&M Hairdressing in Glasgow ensured five star service with their brawny TIGI-tattooed butlers!
Social media was of course a buzz with #BigHairDo action. Guests made use of an impressive array of selfie stations, boomerangs built a picture of the party mood and we’ve chalked up style inspiration to last the long haul!
Alas, the evening had to draw to a close, but guests left laden with goody bags brimming with treats from our Big Hair Do brands, hair appointments banked ready for autumn spruce-ups and Christmas party styling and a wealth of handy hair knowledge. One thing’s for sure, UK salons sure know how to throw a good party…
