Wella Professionals crowns XPOSURE 2020 winners

Champions of this year’s student hairdressing contest named

Wella Professionals has unveiled the winners of its XPOSURE 2020 competition for trainee hairdressers. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic meant that the competition had to take on a revised format this year, with live event stages going digital to ensure they could still go ahead.

Aimed at hair students based in the UK and Ireland, XPOSURE entrants must have less than five years of experience and be training at college or a private training academy. Hundreds of hopefuls submitted photographic entries online, showcasing their hairdressing skills across Creative Colour and Colour the Cut categories. Those that made it through to the next stage were then asked to submit a video in which they talked about their entry – replacing the competition’s traditional regional heats – as well producing as a written document explaining how their look was created, and drawings demonstrating the techniques used.

“We had a record number of entries this year, which under the current circumstances, is incredible,” said Allie Hargreaves, national education operations and events manager for Wella UK & Ireland.
“The standard throughout has been incredibly impressive,” she continued. “British hairdressing is clearly in safe hands if this entry level standard is anything to go by. Congratulations to all the winners.”

Judge Sarah Mason added: “Xposure is a super platform for young hairdressers to step on the career ladder. Expressing your creativity through this competition is opening your eyes to future dreams… (Entrants) should be commended for being brave and creating a video and experimenting with new techniques.”

Joining Sarah in the esteemed judging line up were Darren Lacken, Charlie Taylor, Colin McAndrew, Jayson Gray, Kai Wan, Rudi Rizzo, Gustav Fouche and XPOSURE Gold winner 2018, Lizzie Williams. For both Creative Colour and Colour the Cut categories, the judges collectively selected a Gold, Silver and Bronze winner, with three runners up also awarded in each of the five regions. In addition, 30 Certificates of Merit were presented to competitors who would have been Regional & Ireland Heat winners and who would have competed in the UK & Ireland Final, if it weren’t for the coronavirus outbreak.

Gold, Silver and Bronze winners were awarded a Wella Professionals XPOSURE Trophy, an exclusive experience at the TrendVision Award 2020 UK & Ireland final, bespoke education development programmes and hairdressing tool kits. A special prize also went to Moray College UHI, who had the highest number of entries and won a free education session with a Guest Artist.
