FAME! THREE HAIRDRESSERS SHARE THEIR JOURNEY ON UP
New to Salon Smart ’16, these quick-fire sessions introduced inspirational stylists and salon owners who had great stories of how they came to industry attention.
First up was The Boutique Atelier’s Richard Phillipart from Cheshire, who, having experienced a taste of session hairdressing at Graduate Fashion Week, became so hooked that he would turn up to London Fashion Week, kit bag on his shoulder, and stand in the rain and wait to see whose shows he could assist on… that’s when he wasn’t talking to everyone who moved, in case they were an important contact who could help him on his way! His was a story of passion and persistence that the audience loved.
Katie Mulcahy painted a picture of how she threw herself into every industry competition going, starting with winning Most Wanted One to Watch in 2009, scooping up a place on an amazing FAME Team (Chris Appleton was on it, too), and working with icon Lisa Shepherd before securing the title of Most Wanted Colour Expert – all while working outside of London.
Magic Scissors founder Tony Wood, owner of Southsea’s Tony Wood Hairdressing, spoke very personally of how he had this brilliant idea of uniting the UK’s great stylists with one pair of scissors to cut hair and donate their fee to a good cause… and then going to find the right charity to fit! He went on to raise more than £15,000 to offer vocational training to wannabe hairdressers in Uganda – and he’ll be back for Magic Scissors round two later this year!
