A superb venue (a former Tate & Lyle sugar factory in the heart of East London, now converted into 22,000sq m of industrial chic event space). Entertaining eats and creative cocktails from pop-up maverick, Jimmy Garcia Catering. The stylishly suited comedian, presenter and writer, Suzi Ruffell, as host. And a hotter-than-hot crowd of 650 hair artists dressed in the sleekest, wildest, gender non-conforming fashion. Oh yes, the Most Wanted and It List Grand Final of 2024 was one for the history books.

Power up!

Power up!

High-octane fashion designer Gianni Versace created the celebrity front row, the mesh metal cocktail dress and (arguably) the career of Elizabeth Hurley – but his greatest legacy was the supermodel. So, how fitting that ghd, itself a brand at the heart of popular culture, made a ‘supermodel reunion’ the centrepiece of the 2024 It List awards ceremony, led by their very own Donatella in the form of ghd head of education, Janine Jennings. First featuring a video of the backstage hair prep, each model then emerged IRL and strutted down the ‘catwalk’ to the tune of George Michael’s ‘Freedom! ’90’.

Showtime!

Greatness, incoming…

Greatness, incoming…

An expert in textured hair who is changing the industry for the better, WIG London’s Lisa Farrall officially joined the Most Wanted Legends club after scooping the Texture Expert award three times (in a row)! Here’s what she said from the stage…

LISA'S POEM FROM THE PODIUM

We are always told…

Speak your truth but don’t get angry
Be proud but not too loud
Stand up tall but don’t look down
Never look back but don’t forget where you came from
Be real but not ghetto
Be honest but only in the right rooms
Have equality but discriminate to tick a box
Create change but don’t create a movement
I’ll show you everything, just go figure it out yourself first
You’re good but don’t be better than me
I want you to be honest but I want you to agree
I want you to smile and create the right impression
Be gay but not camp
Be girly but don’t contribute to the patriarchy
Have kids but don’t work too much
Don’t not work
For those that have cried in the salon bathroom or in the car but put on the lipstick right before hitting the stage… I mean salon floor
This is for the underdogs, the ones told not to do it
Too thick to figure it out, but you go on and do it
That are told their body, their mouth or their skin don’t fit
For those stuck or confused and feel so abused
Yet keep a crystal under the moon just in case it can be used
The potions and lotions that stupid witches make that somehow create formulas for big companies to take
This is for the women, men and them
The ones that keep shining because it hurts all of them
In a world seeking validation so we feel we belong
Remember it’s only you that matters when everyone else is long gone
So this is for me, younger me and you
For the family that supports us, birthed or chosen
This is for us
The underdogs and the rebels
The activists, the therapists, the artists, the boundary pushers
So many to say unless we just take it all away and say they call us hairdressers
So, as hairdressers do…
Let’s fuck shit up!
